Gun Hill Signal Station

Heritage · Central · St. George

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Gun Hill Signal Station, built in 1818, is one of six signal stations erected across Barbados after the 1816 slave rebellion to provide early warning of unrest or approaching enemy ships. The beautifully restored hilltop station in St. George sits at around 700 feet, offering panoramic views across the southern parishes all the way to the sea. A short walk from the station stands the famous white Gun Hill Lion, carved from a single piece of coral limestone in 1868 by British officer Henry Wilkinson. Managed by the Barbados National Trust.

About culture in Barbados

Barbados has over 400 years of recorded history, from Amerindian settlement through British colonialism to its 2021 transition to a republic. The UNESCO World Heritage Garrison Historic Area, Harrison's Cave, and St. Nicholas Abbey are must-visit cultural sites. The island's food culture, calypso music tradition, chattel house architecture, and rum heritage make it one of the most culturally rich islands in the Caribbean.
