Rating: 4.8 / 5

Hunte's Gardens in St. Joseph is a magical botanical garden created by the late Bajan horticulturist Anthony Hunte inside a collapsed sinkhole in the central hills. Steep paths wind down through dense tropical planting of palms, heliconias, ferns and flowering trees arranged with theatrical flair, while classical music drifts from hidden speakers. Visitors are traditionally welcomed to the verandah of the Hunte family house with a complimentary rum punch. A small, personal and utterly unique garden experience, long considered one of the island's cultural highlights.

About culture in Barbados

Barbados has over 400 years of recorded history, from Amerindian settlement through British colonialism to its 2021 transition to a republic. The UNESCO World Heritage Garrison Historic Area, Harrison's Cave, and St. Nicholas Abbey are must-visit cultural sites. The island's food culture, calypso music tradition, chattel house architecture, and rum heritage make it one of the most culturally rich islands in the Caribbean.
