Morgan Lewis Windmill

Heritage · North East · St. Andrew

Rating: 4.4 / 5

Morgan Lewis Windmill in St. Andrew is the last complete and intact sugar windmill in the Caribbean, a rare survivor of the hundreds that once dotted the island at the height of the sugar industry. Built in the early 18th century and worked as recently as 1945, the stone tower has been restored to full working condition by the Barbados National Trust and is occasionally run under sail. Set on a high ridge with panoramic views over the Scotland District, it is a striking monument to the industry that shaped Barbados.

About culture in Barbados

Barbados has over 400 years of recorded history, from Amerindian settlement through British colonialism to its 2021 transition to a republic. The UNESCO World Heritage Garrison Historic Area, Harrison's Cave, and St. Nicholas Abbey are must-visit cultural sites. The island's food culture, calypso music tradition, chattel house architecture, and rum heritage make it one of the most culturally rich islands in the Caribbean.
