Rating: 4.5 / 5

Cheapside Public Market in Bridgetown is the oldest and most atmospheric fresh produce market in Barbados, with roots stretching back over a century. Housed in a purpose-built hall near the Careenage, it is where farmers, fisherfolk and higglers bring tropical fruit and vegetables, ground provisions like yam, cassava and breadfruit, herbs, seasoning peppers and Bajan sweets. Saturday mornings are the busiest, when the aisles fill with shoppers picking up the week's groceries. A living snapshot of Bajan food culture for anyone wanting to see how the island really eats.
