Born in Bay Land, Bridgetown in 1936, Sir Garfield Sobers is widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer in the history of the game. In 93 Tests for the West Indies he scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, took 235 wickets bowling in three different styles and held 109 catches. In 1958 he set the then world Test record of 365 not out against Pakistan, and in 1968 he became the first player to hit six sixes in a first-class over. Knighted in 1975, his statue stands proudly outside Kensington Oval.
